Exercise 2: Automating Swallowing Through Olfaction

This optional exercise is helpful, especially for patients with difficulty maintaining consistent nasal breathing.

Materials Needed:
  • Three different scented products (e.g., perfumes, essential oils)
  • Ensure the scents are visually indistinguishable.
Steps:

Initial Identification:

Have the patient smell each scent and identify it (e.g., lavender, strawberry).

Blind Test:


Mix the bottles while the patient closes their eyes, then present each bottle again for identification. Repeat up to three times.

Frequency:

  • At home: 2-3 times a week for up to a month.
  • In practice: Repeat during follow-up visits.
  • This exercise can be done by a dental assistant if needed.
